Where Does Florida Rank in the Country on Economic Factors?

Florida has had a GOP Governor and majority legislature for 28 years straight.   Let’s see how Florida is doing under their leadership.

Schools

  • Our SAT scores are among the lowest in the nation (Source)
  • Dead last in teacher pay  (Source)
  • Florida just experienced one of the biggest drops in public school enrollment between 2024 and 2025, more than doubling the national decreased in enrollment rate. (Source)
  • The rapid expansion of the state’s School Choice program created a $47 million hole in the education budget, plus 23,000 students were identified as being enrolled in both public and private school at the same time! Clearly Florida’s current administration is not putting a priority on public schools in our state. (Source)
  • Florida leads the entire nation in school book bans for the third year in a row. (Source)

Healthcare:  Florida ranks poorly on cost and access.  A 2025 study put it at 42nd of 50 states with the 48th lowest rate of insured adults age 19-64.  This is largely due to the fact that Florida has opted out of Medicaid expansion.   (Source)

Housing: Florida’s median home price of $420,000 runs well above the national median, and Florida ranks among the least affordable for renters as well.  A consumer Affairs analysis ranked it the worst state for renters as about 2.8 million Floridians, struggle with rising housing5,630 costs. To purchase a home a household needs roughly $129,532 to afford a median home, nearly $54,000 above the state’s median household income of $75, 630. (Source)

Housing Insurance: Florida is the most expensive state in the country on home owner’s insurance. (Source)

Children Food Insecurity:  One in five children in Florida live in a home where the next meal is not guaranteed, and nearly 3 million Floridians, overall face food insecurity.

Again in 2026, Ron DeSantis has opted out of a federal program called Sun Bucks which provides $120 in grocery benefits over the summer for low-income children.  Only a dozen (all Republican led) states opted out; and Florida are one of them.   This means Florida has turned down over $250 million in nutritional aid.  (Source)

What has the Florida GOP Supermajority Legislature Passed this 2025-2026 Session?
